Invigorating growth is critical: When the economy expands, it improves standards of living, promotes innovation and makes households wealthier. Economic growth in Spain and France was stronger than expected last year. But the US is outperforming mainly for one key reason: Robust productivity growth. Productivity growth came in well below expectations in the first three months of the year, according to Labor Department data released last week. A “course correction” isn’t an even stronger US economy: Economic policymakers around the world need to address a range of key issues.

A hotter-than-expected consumer price index on Tuesday sent stocks reeling, with the Dow posting its biggest drop in a year. Stocks bounced back over the next two days, helped by a softer retail sales report , only to slump again on Friday's hot producer price index for January. As we said this week, we're not overly concerned with the hotter-than-expected inflationary readings. Earnings season picks back up for the Club next week, with four holdings set to report quarterly results. REUTERS/Chris Wattie/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 8 (Reuters) - Canada's Suncor Energy (SU.TO) beat market estimates for third-quarter profit on Wednesday, helped by strong refining margins and higher sales volumes from its oil sands operations. Refinery throughput declined marginally to 463,200 barrels per day (bpd) compared with a year earlier. Its net production of synthetic crude, a processed form of raw and heavy bitumen, rose to 469,300 bpd, compared with 405,100 bpd a year ago, due to lower maintenance activities. The company reported a net profit of C$1.54 billion, compared with a year-ago loss of C$609 million when it was hit by impairment charges.

OTTAWA, Oct 13 (Reuters) - Canada's Supreme Court on Friday ruled a federal law assessing how major infrastructure projects like coal mines and oil sands plants impact the environment is largely unconstitutional, in a blow to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government. "This is a significant setback for the federal government," said David Wright, a law professor at the University of Calgary. "The court has said the federal government can enact environmental assessment legislation but the way they went about it, for most of this law, goes too far." The IAA was drafted by Trudeau's Liberal government in 2019 in a bid to streamline and restore trust in the environmental approval process for major projects. Last year the federal government warned Suncor the environmental impact from expanding Base Mine would be "unacceptable" under the IAA because expected carbon emissions were too high.

CALGARY, Alberta, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said on Monday she wanted to announce the details of investment tax credits to support carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects at the COP 28 climate summit in Dubai at the end of this year. Smith made the announcement during a news conference on the sidelines of the World Petroleum Congress in Calgary. Alberta is Canada's main producer of crude oil and natural gas, and its highest carbon-emitting province. COP 28 runs from Nov. 30 until Dec. 12. The mechanism gives investors in CCS certainty about their future revenue by setting a minimum price for their carbon credits. Oil companies in the country's highest-emitting sector are counting on CCS to help dramatically cut emissions while continuing to pump oil and gas. Carbon credits represent reduced or avoided carbon emissions, and companies use them to mitigate greenhouse gases they generate. The government has told Pathways that the Growth Fund may not be equipped to handle some projects, said the Pathways representative who asked not to be named. Canada set up the Growth Fund last year, which is run through the Public Sector Pension Investment Board, a federal Crown corporation.

June 6 (Reuters) - Canada's TC Energy (TRP.TO) is cutting some jobs to "optimize value" a company spokesperson said on Tuesday, without giving details of how many positions have been impacted. News of the job cuts at TC Energy comes a week after Suncor Energy (SU.TO) told employees it would eliminate 1,500 jobs. Earlier this year, Imperial Oil IMO.TO cut the number of contractors working at its Kearl oil sands project. TC Energy said the company continually reviews its operations and as the business evolves some positions are reduced. "These decisions are difficult but necessary to optimize the value for our business," a TC Energy spokesperson said in an email.

May 10 (Reuters) - British industrial technology company Smiths Group Plc (SMIN.L) on Wednesday named Steve Williams as its next chairman to succeed George Buckley, who is retiring at the end of the company's annual general meeting in November. UK-born Williams, who is currently chair of U.S. aluminum producer Alcoa Corporation (AA.N), started his career at ExxonMobil. His appointment at Smiths Group is subject to his election as non-executive director at the company's AGM. May 8 (Reuters) - Canada's Suncor Energy Inc (SU.TO) reported a better-than-expected first-quarter profit on Monday, helped by steady demand for energy amid crimped global supplies. The results come amid global oil prices pulling back from last year's record highs and trading 20% below on average, but the prices are still higher than historical levels due to tight supplies. On an adjusted basis, the company earned C$1.36 per share, compared with analysts' estimates of C$1.32 per share. Peers Imperial Oil Ltd (IMO.TO) and Cenovus Energy Inc (CVE.TO) had also beat profit estimates last month. Its refinery utilization averaged 76% and the crude throughput was 367,700 barrels per day (bpd), compared with 436,500 bpd last year.
With only a small fraction of the S & P 500 left to report quarterly earnings, investors are now turning their focus to another major hurdle for the markets and economy: the debt ceiling crisis. Earlier this week, we looked back to debt limit crisis of 2011 for potential lessons. The protracted fight ultimately ended in an agreement in early August of that year, but it was a choppy summertime ride for investors. Within the portfolio, Wynn Resorts will report Tuesday, after the closing bell, and Disney will report on Wednesday, after the closing bell. Estee Lauder (EL) and Emerson Electric (EMR) reported earnings before the opening bell.
TotalEnergies said its first-quarter adjusted net income fell 27% to $6.5 billion - in line with analyst expectations - due to lower energy prices. It also confirmed it expected net investments of $16-18 billion this year, including $5 billion for low-carbon energies. After European refining capacity was hampered by French strikes in the first quarter, TotalEnergies anticipates its facilities will ramp back up above 80%. TotalEnergies' share price was down around 1% in early trade, in line with falls across the sector and relatively weak oil prices . Analysts said its results were positive, as was the sale of carbon intensive oil sands given investors' focus on lower carbon energy.
TotalEnergies said its first-quarter adjusted net income fell 27% to $6.5 billion - in line with analyst expectations - due to lower oil and gas prices. French oil and gas major TotalEnergies said on Thursday it had accepted an offer to sell its carbon-heavy Canadian oil sands operations to Suncor Energy for $4.1 billion, with potential additional payments of up to $450 million. TotalEnergies said its first-quarter adjusted net income fell 27% to $6.5 billion - in line with analyst expectations - due to lower oil and gas prices. It confirmed it expected net investments of $16-18 billion this year, including $5 billion for low-carbon energies. But the margins on refining diesel will drop as Chinese exports increase and Russian volumes find new global buyers.
The justices turned away five appeals by the oil companies of lower court decisions that determined that the lawsuits belonged in state court, a venue often seen as more favorable to plaintiffs than federal court. A separate appeal filed by the oil companies challenging lower court decisions in cases out of New Jersey and Delaware is still pending before the Supreme Court. Theodore Boutrous, an attorney for Chevron, expressed confidence that the cases will be dismissed in state court. That decision prompted other federal appeals courts to reconsider whether they should send similar lawsuits by state and local governments back to state courts. Four other appeals courts reached similar conclusions in the lawsuits by Rhode Island and jurisdictions in California, Colorado, Hawaii and Maryland.
April 22 (Reuters) - The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) has started an investigation into the death of 32 waterfowl at a Suncor Energy Inc (SU.TO) tailings pond on its Base Mine Site, 29 km (18 miles) north of Fort McMurray. It was detected during an oilsands bird contact monitoring program survey, according to a statement from the regulator. The company has further discovered two additional dead wildlife, one muskrat and one vole, at the site since it notified the AER. Suncor said it had begun an investigation after finding the dead wildlife on Friday, on the edge of a tailings pond at the Base Plant site during one of its regular, required checks. "At the time of discovery, all bird deterrent systems at Base Plant were active."
April 18 (Reuters) - Canada's Suncor Energy (SU.TO) has reported the release of 5,900 cubic metres (208,400 cubic feet) of water with more than twice the approved level of suspended solids from a sedimentation pond at its Fort Hills oil sands project in northern Alberta. The water came from a sedimentation pond, which collects and discharges surface run-off from the oil sands site, and not a tailings pond, Suncor spokesperson Erin Rees said in an email. Oil sands companies are under scrutiny for how they manage water on their sites, after Imperial Oil (IMO.TO) said in February that tailings ponds at its Kearl site had been seeping for months and another spill released 5,300 cubic metres of process water in late January. "This is not a tailings pond, but a water run-off pond that collects and discharges run off into Fort Creek ... in line with regulatory approvals," Rees said. The water discharges into Fort Creek roughly 800 metres upstream of the Athabasca River, the main waterway running through the oil sands region.
SummarySummary Companies Solicitor general urged SCOTUS to reject Big Oil's appealFive appeals courts have supported state jurisdictionMarch 16 (Reuters) - A lawsuit filed by several Colorado municipalities accusing ExxonMobil Corp and Suncor Energy Inc. of exacerbating climate change belongs in state court where it was filed, the Biden administration told the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday. The administration urged the justices to reject the oil companies’ petition for review of a February 2022 appeals court's ruling that sent the case back to state court, a venue generally considered more favorable to the municipal plaintiffs. The oil companies have denied the local and state governments' allegations and argued that despite the municipalities only raising state law claims, the cases clearly raise federal questions. The Supreme Court first considered the jurisdiction question in 2021 in case brought by the city of Baltimore. Circuit Court of Appeals to reconsider arguments for removal raised by the oil companies in that case, but didn't weigh in directly on which courts were proper.
Equinor became Europe's top natural gas supplier last year after exports from Russia were mostly choked off following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Europe cut demand, increased domestic output and imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) at huge cost in response to the drop in Russian gas supplies, which accounted for around half of the region's supply in 2021. "Trying to replace 150 billion cubic metres of (Russian) gas is a massive task. "The weather in Asia can set the gas price in Europe," Opedal said. Equinor produced over 2 million barrels of oil equivalent of oil and gas in 2022, when it reported a record adjusted operating profit of $75 billion on the back of soaring oil and gas prices.

Wall Street also advanced as U.S. Treasury yields eased and economic data helped investors look past the growing likelihood that the Federal Reserve will keep its restrictive policy in place for longer than anticipated.
